Jordan slams Israel's detention of Jerusalem Waqf religious staff
AMMONNEWS - Jordan on Saturday condemned Israel's arrest of a number of staff members of Jerusalem's Waqf religious authority as they carried out routine maintenance work this morning inside occupied Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound/ Haram Al Sharif.
Jordan rejects such provocative acts, which constitute a blatant and unjustified interference in the work of the Jordanian Waqf administration in Jerusalem, State Minister for Media Affairs and Official Government Spokesperson, Jomana Ghneimat, said in a statement.
Such actions, she warned, will only further tension, demanding a halt to these measures and calling on Israel to live up to its obligations under the international law as the occupying power in East Jerusalem.
Ghneimat said Israel should stop its violations against the Waqf administration as a national authority, under international law, with jurisdiction over all of the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque affairs.
The minister said that since the detention of the Waqf employees, the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs has been trying to secure their immediate release, and has lodged a formal protest against Israeli violations.
