Baptismal Site nominated for World Heritage status
AMMONNEWS - ordan will take part in the World Heritage Committee meeting in Bonn, Germany, that will run until July 8 to examine the nominations to add 37 sites, including the Baptism Site, to the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Al Fayez, will lead the delegation to the meeting.
UNESCO said in a statement that proposals for 37 sites are being considered for inclusion on the World Heritage List. Nominations for the list this year include five natural sites, 31 cultural sites and one mixed site, which is both natural and cultural.
In case the Baptism site, 40 kilometers west of Amman, is inscribed on the list, it will increase its global importance, especially after affirming the church's recognition of the sacred nature of this terrain, UNESCO added.
Also known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan, the site is where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist, according to Christian beliefs.
