AMMAN (Jordan Times) — A Jordan Armed Forces (JAF) source said border forces foiled an attempt to smuggle large quantities of arms from Syria to Jordan early Thursday morning.
“The border guards arrested a group of people at dawn on Thursday as they tried to smuggle a large number of weapons from Syria into Jordan,” an army statement said, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
The forces arrested the smugglers, who were found on the Jordanian-Syrian border, according to the army’s statement.
It did not elaborate further.
The JAF have over the past months tightened the 370km border with Syria, amid allegations that anti-Syrian regime fighters and weapons are smuggled into the northern neighbour.
Jordanian officials have repeatedly rejected these claims as baseless, stressing Jordan’s neutral stand on the conflict in Syria, which has been raging for over 27 months.
However, the military border units have been busy over the past two years receiving hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, whose number stands now at around 540,000.
A large portion of the refugees are hosted in two camps set up by authorities, with international help.
