39,000 polygamists in Jordan, Higher Population Council says
The Higher Population Council revealed in its report on the current marital status of Jordanian men and women that polygamy among Jordanian men is a rare occurrence.
The council said on Sunday that only around 1.3% of married Jordanian men have more than one wife, totaling approximately 39,000 married men.
It added that the low rate of polygamy in Jordan is partly because men who marry a second wife often divorce their first wife beforehand, leaving them with only one spouse. As a result, having one wife remains the dominant marital pattern in Jordan, and polygamy remains uncommon.
