Ammon News - Heavy rainfall caused partial road closures in Jordan on Saturday, including a temporary closure near the Dead Sea hotels, as the Ministry of Public Works and Housing responded to several weather-related reports over the past 24 hours.
Ministry spokesperson Omar Maharmeh said the road near the Dead Sea hotels was closed due to soil erosion, adding that ministry crews dealt with the incident in less than 30 minutes.
Maharmeh noted that most reports involved rising water levels, water accumulation, or soil, sand and rocks being washed onto roads, stressing that the ministry's field teams responded to the incidents.
The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) had warned of possible flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas as rainfall intensified in Balqa and Madaba governorates, the central Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea area.
The department said the latest radar images indicated increasingly heavy rainfall, raising the risk of sudden flash floods, particularly in the Dead Sea area and surrounding valleys, where rainwater can flow rapidly from higher ground.
It also warned of possible soil erosion and rockslides on mountain roads and slopes, urging people to stay away from valleys and areas where water accumulates, avoid recreational trips to low-lying areas and refrain from crossing flooded roads.
The department stressed that flash floods could reach low-lying areas through surrounding valleys even if those locations do not experience heavy rainfall, calling on the public to follow weather forecasts and comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
