JMD warns of flash floods in Balqa, Madaba and Dead Sea areas

07-11-2026 11:22 AM

Ammon News - The Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) warned of possible flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas as rainfall intensifies in Balqa and Madaba governorates, the central Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea area and valleys leading to it in the coming hours.

The department said the latest radar images indicate increasingly heavy rainfall in these areas, which could become intense at times, raising the risk of sudden flash floods.

It urged extreme caution in the Dead Sea area and surrounding valleys, noting that the terrain allows rainwater to accumulate and flow rapidly towards lower areas. Floodwaters could reach the Dead Sea through surrounding valleys even if the area itself does not experience heavy rainfall.

The department also warned of possible soil erosion and rockslides, particularly on mountain roads, slopes and valley beds, urging people to stay away from valleys and areas where water accumulates and avoid recreational trips to low-lying areas, especially near the Dead Sea.

It called on motorists and pedestrians not to attempt to cross flooded roads, to follow weather forecasts and warnings, and to comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities.

The department stressed that the risk of flash floods is not limited to areas experiencing heavy rainfall, as rainwater can flow from surrounding highlands through valleys and reach low-lying areas without warning.
