Google drops YouTube support for older Android devices

27-07-2026 10:41 AM

Ammon News - Google has officially discontinued support for the YouTube app and its core related services on older smartphones running Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

This move literally reduces the level of security protection available for those devices, which came after the firm raised the minimum requirements needed to run its services suite.

As such, this will make Android 7.0 Nougat the currently supported version, as Google believes that continuing support for legacy operating systems hinders the development of new features and increases security risks.

The impact of this measure extends to further security vulnerabilities for those devices due to the absence of future updates, prompting technology experts to advise users to either access the platform through a web browser, check for pending system updates, or upgrade to a newer device to ensure continued app functionality and data security.

Consequently, affected users have begun receiving a notification urging them to switch to YouTube's official website through internet browsers as an alternative to the app, which has completely stopped functioning.
