Ammon News - Aqaba Governor Ayman Al-Awaisheh confirmed that the black liquid substance seen in a video circulating from the governorate’s back road was waste oil that had been illegally dumped by a tanker truck.
Al-Awaisheh said authorities inspected the site and found that a tanker had discharged its load of waste oil in an area adjacent to the public road, constituting an environmental and traffic violation that warrants legal accountability due to the risks it poses to public safety and the environment.
He added that the relevant authorities acted immediately after the incident was detected. The site was inspected, and the nature of the substance was verified in cooperation with the concerned agencies, while the Public Works Directorate and environmental teams began taking the necessary measures to address the situation.
Al-Awaisheh stressed that authorities are continuing to investigate the case to identify those responsible and take strict legal action against them. He emphasized that Aqaba Governorate will not tolerate any practices that harm the environment or endanger citizens and road users, and that the law will be enforced against anyone proven to be involved in such irresponsible actions.
He explained that technical teams successfully contained and covered the oil spill and implemented preventive measures to avoid vehicle skidding and protect public safety.
The situation is now fully under control and no longer poses any danger following the completion of cleanup operations, he confirmed.
The statement came after social media users widely shared a video in recent hours claiming to show what appeared to be petroleum-like substances emerging from a mountainous area in Aqaba.
The footage showed a liquid flowing from the site, prompting speculation about its nature and whether it could indicate the presence of oil deposits. Citizens called on the relevant authorities to verify the information and conduct the necessary tests to determine the substance's true nature.
