A century of continuity: How three historic chapters shaped modern Jordan

08-06-2026 11:34 AM

Ammon News - Every June, Jordan pauses to observe a trilogy of national milestones that together form the foundational narrative of the state. The anniversaries of the Great Arab Revolt, Army Day, and the Accession of His Majesty King Abdullah II to the Throne are not merely separate calendar dates for the Jordanian public; they represent the ideological framework, the defensive shield, and the modern developmental roadmap of a country built on historical continuity and institutional resilience.

These celebrations highlight a state-building process driven by Hashemite governance and guarded by the professionals of the Arab Army, tracing a clear line from early twentieth-century revolutionary ideals to twenty-first-century structural reforms.

The Great Arab Revolt and Ideological Roots The historical trajectory of modern Jordan began on June 10, 1916, when Sharif Hussein bin Ali launched the Great Arab Revolt. This movement was designed as a comprehensive Arab renaissance project, focusing on cultural preservation, sovereignty, and independence from administrative oppression. It established a unified political identity that directly shaped the governance models of the region.

In 1917, Sharif Hussein officially designated the revolutionary forces as the Arab Army, a title that remains the formal name of the Jordanian Armed Forces today. This initial military structure laid the groundwork for the modern state, with successive leaders expanding on this foundation. King Abdullah I established the institutional foundations of the early Emirate, King Talal drafted the formal Constitution, and King Hussein oversaw the rapid expansion of public infrastructure and civil institutions during his long reign.

Military Evolution and Strategic Defense The Jordanian Armed Forces-Arab Army has historically functioned as a core pillar of internal stability and external defense. A key moment in its institutional history occurred when King Hussein enacted the Arabization of the Army Command, removing foreign command structures to secure complete sovereign control over national defense policy.

Under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, the military has undergone a comprehensive structural transformation designed to transition the army into a highly flexible, modern force capable of addressing unconventional security challenges. This modernization program has integrated advanced technology across all branches, including electronic border surveillance networks, radar systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and electronic warfare capabilities. Beyond territorial defense, the military contributes directly to national development plans, international peacekeeping operations, and global humanitarian relief missions.

The anniversary of the Accession to the Throne marks the period since King Abdullah II assumed his constitutional powers on June 9, 1999. Over the past nearly three decades, the Kingdom's domestic agenda has focused on accelerating political modernization, empowering youth and women, and expanding institutional accountability under the rule of law.

Economic policies during this period have prioritized structural reforms aimed at building a more competitive, sustainable economy, improving the investment environment, and fostering long-term employment opportunities across various sectors. On the international stage, Jordan has maintained its traditional role as a diplomatic mediator and regional stabilizing force. This foreign policy architecture remains committed to upholding international law, supporting regional security, and consistently defending Palestinian rights and holy sites under the historical Hashimite Custodianship.
