Ammon News - The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced the suspension of food assistance for 135,000 Syrian refugees living in host communities in Jordan due to a severe funding shortage.
In a report, the WFP said it will continue supporting refugees in camps at the current reduced level of 15 Jordanian dinars per person.
The agency assisted nearly 585,000 people in April, transferring around $2 million in cash assistance to beneficiaries. It noted that it requires $20 million to sustain its operations over the next six months.
The WFP also completed the first phase of its camp-based activities in Jordan, providing practical skills training to 230 young refugees to improve livelihood opportunities and resilience, including 160 youth in Zaatari Camp and 70 in Azraq Camp.
The report indicated that approximately 192,000 Syrian refugees returned from Jordan to Syria between December 2024 and the end of April 2026.
School Feeding Programme
More than half a million students benefited from school feeding activities during April.
According to the report, around 106,000 students received nutritious meals in schools located in camps and host communities, while another 400,000 students received fortified date bars, with a total of 480 tonnes distributed.
The WFP also supported the launch of 11 new smallholder farmer projects in cooperation with Jordan's Agricultural Credit Corporation, focusing on climate-smart agricultural technologies and strengthening resilient food systems.
