Jordan marks 80th Independence Day on Monday

24-05-2026 08:33 AM

Ammon News - Jordanians celebrate the Kingdom’s 80th Independence Day tomorrow, Monday, marking eight decades of state-building and comprehensive modernization under the Hashemite leadership, while maintaining national stability despite ongoing regional crises.

On May 25, 1946, King Abdullah I, the founder of the Kingdom, signed the declaration of independence and sovereignty. Since then, the country has focused on building a state rooted in law, institutions, and civic responsibility. Tomorrow's anniversary serves as an occasion to reinforce national achievements under the vision of King Abdullah II.

Since independence, Jordan has expanded its state institutions, strengthened national unity, and advanced its socioeconomic capabilities. Over the past eight decades, the country has registered developments across education, healthcare, and infrastructure, maintaining domestic security and sustainable growth despite regional and international shifts. Under King Abdullah II, the state has managed the severe economic and geopolitical pressures driven by consecutive regional refugee crises.

Since assuming his constitutional powers in 1999, King Abdullah II has built upon the legacy of the late King Hussein, utilizing active diplomacy to solidify Jordan’s role as a regional anchor for peace and stability. The King has consistently prioritized pan-Arab cooperation and advocated for the Palestinian cause, maintaining the Hashemite Custodianship over Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem as a core national priority for achieving a comprehensive peace.

Domestically, the Kingdom continues its political and legislative modernization to enhance democratic participation, supported by a judicial system focused on transparency and the rule of law. Economically, current initiatives focus on expanding the free-market economy, attracting foreign direct investment, and leveraging the private sector to combat poverty and unemployment.

Parallel efforts in digital transformation, future technologies, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are modernizing public sector delivery. These initiatives, closely supported by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, run alongside ongoing administrative reforms aimed at improving institutional efficiency, empowering youth and women, and fostering new leadership within public institutions.
