Ammon News - In a distinguished scientific contribution reflecting the growing Arab presence in global research platforms, Dr. Mohammed Torki Bani Salameh from the Department of Political and International Studies at Yarmouk University published an important scientific chapter titled "Climate Change and Water Stress in the Middle East: Transforming Conflict into Cooperation" in the specialized international book "Hydroclimate Changes: Implications of the Middle East Region", published by Springer in May 2026.
This research work is considered a high-quality study addressing one of the most critical strategic issues facing the Middle East. It examines the accelerating impacts of climate change on water security in the region amid rising temperatures, declining rainfall rates, increasing extreme weather events, and the complexities of cross-border political and military conflicts.
The scientific chapter presented by Dr. Bani Salameh stood out for its in-depth analytical approach combining environmental and political dimensions. It explained how climate shifts and water scarcity can be transformed from sources of tension and conflict into genuine opportunities for regional cooperation and peacebuilding through what is known as "water diplomacy." The study also reviewed the challenges related to managing shared water resources and highlighted the importance of developing effective governance frameworks that ensure sustainability and stability in the region.
The work further demonstrated the advanced use of modern scientific knowledge and its connection to practical, real-world solutions. Dr. Bani Salameh emphasized the importance of employing technology, enhancing water-use efficiency, and investing in resilient infrastructure capable of addressing the consequences of climate change and achieving sustainable development.
This achievement carries additional academic significance as it was published within a global scientific volume supervised by Her Royal Highness Professor Dr. Mishaal bint Mohammed bin Saud Al Saud, the editor-in-chief of the book and one of the leading Saudi researchers in geography and climate studies. She serves as a professor at King Saud University and is widely recognized for her pioneering research contributions and efforts in supporting scientific knowledge. She was recently honored with the “Creative Excellence in Scientific Research” award during the International Partnerships Conference in May 2026.
Academics and specialists praised the book and its specialized chapters for their high scientific standards, emphasizing that this publication represents an important scientific reference for understanding hydroclimatic transformations in the Middle East. It also reflects the success of Arab academic cooperation in producing scientific knowledge capable of addressing the world through rigorous research and practical solutions.
This work confirms that water and climate change issues are no longer merely environmental challenges, but strategic matters directly linked to security, stability, and the future of coming generations, making this book an exceptional scientific contribution at a highly critical time.
