Amman earns global smart city milestone with British certification

21-05-2026 11:25 AM

Ammon News - Amman became the first capital city worldwide to secure the British quality certification for smart and sustainable cities, marking a major milestone in the capital’s digital transformation and urban modernization strategy.

The certification was awarded to the Greater Amman Municipality after an independent assessment conducted by the British Standards Institution under the ISO 37106 international standard for smart and sustainable cities and communities.

Chairman of the Greater Amman Municipality committee Yousef Al-Shawarbeh said the achievement reflects Amman’s accelerating shift toward technology-driven urban management and smarter public services designed around residents’ needs.

He added that the recognition highlights the municipality’s adoption of innovative, data-based solutions aimed at improving institutional efficiency, enhancing sustainability and raising the quality of life across the capital.

According to the municipality, the certification recognizes Amman’s progress in implementing integrated smart city strategies at a time when cities worldwide face mounting pressure linked to population growth, infrastructure demand and resource management challenges.

The municipality noted that urban populations are expected to account for 68 percent of the global population by 2050, increasing pressure on transportation, housing and energy systems and reinforcing the importance of smart city technologies in improving efficiency and sustainability.

Director of the Urban Observatory Department and head of the quality mark committee Akram Khrisat said the recognition represents a significant step in strengthening institutional performance and confirms Amman’s commitment to international standards in smart urban governance.

Meanwhile, Continental Europe, Middle East and Africa Product Certification Commercial Director at the British Standards Institution Samuel Thwaites said Amman is moving rapidly toward becoming a fully integrated smart and sustainable city through expanding advanced digital infrastructure and interconnected urban systems.

He added that the municipality has deployed artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and cloud-computing technologies across municipal services, including data centers, command-and-control platforms, real-time traffic management systems and SCADA-based environmental monitoring networks.

Thwaites said the scalable digital infrastructure allows seamless data integration and real-time decision-making, strengthening public services and positioning Amman as an emerging regional center for smart city innovation.
