Ammon News - Jordan has signed a 78.2-million-dollar deal with the US government to support the preparedness program for receiving water from the National Water Carrier Project.
The deal was signed by Secretary General of the Water Authority, Sufian Al-Batayneh, in the presence of the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Zeina Toukan and representatives of stakeholders and grant givers. The deal was sponsored by Minister of water and Irrigation Raed Abu Soud.
The agreement aims to prepare local infrastructure to receive, transfer and distribute excess water from the National Water Carrier Project, through implementing key components in the governorates of Amman and Zarqa.
It also includes creating strategic tanks and transfer lines that ties water sources to their main networks.
Abu Soud commended the American support regarding the Jordanian water sector, by emphasizing that the deal marks a key step in enhancing water security and improving the sustainability of water supply, as part of the National Water Strategy 2023–2040.
On her behalf, Touqan reaffirmed that the deal presents the beginning of projects accompanying the National Carrier.
Meanwhile, Al-Batayneh noted that these projects will help turn investments into tangible improvements in water services.
The agreement further includes design and supervision services, alongside introducing advanced technology to detect leaks, improve network efficiency, and build institutional capacity.
It is worth mentioning that this deal serves as the first initiative of the program to prepare for receiving water from the national carrier, which includes 11 projects at an estimated cost of approximately $850 million.
Also, The National Carrier Project is expected to cover around 40% of the Kingdom’s water needs by the time of its completion in the year 2030.
