Mandela becomes first Black president of South Africa

Ammon News - On this day in 1996, Nelson Mandela became the first Black president of South Africa.

True to his promise, Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one term as President.

Nelson Mandela never wavered in his devotion to democracy, equality and learning. Despite terrible provocation, he never answered racism with racism.

He died at his home in Johannesburg on 5 December 2013.
