Ammon News - The 2025 annual traffic accidents report revealed that 683 traffic accidents involved drivers who were either under the influence of alcohol or had exceeded the legal blood alcohol limit. These included 646 collision accidents, 20 pedestrian run-over accidents, and 17 rollover accidents during the year.
The report showed that these accidents resulted in 62 injuries and 3 fatalities. Injuries were classified as 39 minor, 19 moderate, and 4 severe cases.
Statistical analysis indicated that minor injuries accounted for 60% of all injuries, followed by moderate injuries at 29.2%, and severe injuries at 6.2%, while fatalities represented 4.6% of total injuries.
The analysis also revealed that collision accidents accounted for 61.5% of all alcohol-related injuries, followed by pedestrian accidents at 35.4%, and rollover accidents at 3.1%.
Regarding age distribution, younger age groups recorded the highest rates. The number of accidents was 99 cases for ages 27–29, 91 cases for ages 30–32, 90 cases for ages 24–26, 67 cases for ages 21–23, and 30 cases for ages 18–20.
The analysis showed that 41% of drivers involved in alcohol-related accidents were aged 24–32, indicating a concentration among young drivers.
Additionally, 89.8% of the drivers involved committed traffic violations, compared to only 70 cases where no violations were recorded. Lane violations ranked first at 51.1% (313 cases), followed by failure to take necessary precautions at 19.1% (117 cases), not leaving a safe distance at 9.8% (60 cases), and right-of-way violations at 6.4% (39 cases).
Other violations included improper reversing (3.6%, 22 cases) and speeding (3.3%, 20 cases). Less frequent violations included incorrect handling of curves (2.0%), driving against traffic (1.1%), and running red lights (1.0%), along with other minor violations.
Time distribution showed that these accidents were heavily concentrated in the evening and nighttime. The period from 18:00 to 23:59 recorded the highest number (304 accidents, 44.5%), followed by 00:00 to 05:59 (282 accidents, 41.3%). The period from 12:00 to 17:59 recorded 58 accidents (8.5%), while 06:00 to 11:59 recorded the lowest (39 accidents, 5.7%).
Monthly data indicated that October recorded the highest number of alcohol-related accidents (74 accidents, 10.8%), followed by June (66 accidents, 9.7%), then May and January (65 accidents each, 9.5%), July (64 accidents, 9.4%), April (59 accidents, 8.6%), August (58 accidents, 8.5%), September (53 accidents, 7.8%), February (52 accidents, 7.6%), and December (51 accidents, 7.5%). March recorded the lowest number (19 accidents, 2.8%).
Geographically, the capital governorate recorded the highest number (411 accidents, 60.2%), followed by Irbid (79 accidents, 11.6%), Balqa (51 accidents, 7.5%), Zarqa (50 accidents, 7.3%), and Karak (35 accidents, 5.1%). Lower numbers were recorded in other governorates, including Aqaba (20 accidents, 2.9%), Madaba and Ajloun (10 accidents each, 1.5%), Jerash (8 accidents, 1.2%), Mafraq (6 accidents, 0.9%), Ma’an (2 accidents, 0.3%), and Tafilah (1 accident, 0.1%).
In terms of speed limits, roads with a 60 km/h limit recorded the highest share (238 accidents, 34.8%), followed by 40 km/h roads (221 accidents, 32.4%), and 50 km/h roads (147 accidents, 21.5%).
Higher-speed roads recorded fewer accidents: 80 km/h (36 accidents, 5.3%), 70 km/h (14 accidents, 2.0%), 100 km/h (12 accidents, 1.8%), below 40 km/h (10 accidents, 1.5%), 90 km/h (3 accidents, 0.4%), and 110 km/h (2 accidents, 0.3%), indicating that most incidents occur on urban roads.
Regarding lighting conditions, 448 accidents (65.6%) occurred at night with adequate lighting, compared to 149 accidents (21.8%) during daytime, 62 accidents (9.1%) at night with insufficient lighting, and 11 accidents (1.6%) in complete darkness, in addition to 8 accidents (1.2%) at sunrise and 5 accidents (0.7%) at sunset. This confirms that nighttime driving is most strongly associated with alcohol-related accidents.
