U.S. Embassy in Amman issues security alert, urges Americans to depart

Ammon News -

The U.S. Embassy in Amman issued a security alert on Wednesday urging American citizens in Jordan to remain vigilant and consider departure options amid rising regional tensions.

In the alert released on March 11, the embassy said the U.S. government is closely monitoring the situation and will continue providing updated information to help Americans make informed decisions about their safety. Officials emphasized that the well-being of U.S. citizens remains their top priority.

The embassy noted that commercial flights are currently operating from Queen Alia International Airport and advised Americans who believe it is safe to do so to strongly consider leaving the region on available flights. Travelers were encouraged to check directly with airlines or travel agents regarding schedules and ticket availability.

Several land border crossings remain open, though operating hours may change and the ability to cross may depend on nationality and security conditions. These include King Hussein Bridge, Wadi Araba Crossing, Jordan Valley Crossing, and Jaber Border Crossing. Crossings with Saudi Arabia, including the Al-Omari Border Crossing, Al-Mudawara Border Crossing, and Al-Durra Crossing, are open 24 hours a day.

Sea travel is also available via ferry services between Aqaba and Egypt. Individuals wishing to leave Jordan by sea were advised to contact ferry operators directly for schedules and availability.

The alert warned that Iran has attacked civilian locations across the Middle East, including hotels, airports, embassies, and other civil facilities, urging Americans who remain in the region to prepare to shelter in place if necessary. Citizens were advised to keep essential supplies such as food, water, medications, and other necessities readily available.

The embassy also reminded U.S. nationals that the U.S. Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families to leave Jordan on March 3 due to the threat of armed conflict. Routine consular services at the embassy have been suspended, and Americans were urged to contact the embassy in case of emergencies.

Officials further advised citizens to avoid protests and demonstrations, remain aware of their surroundings, follow instructions from local authorities, and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive security updates.
