Jordan launches agricultural innovation initiatives

09-03-2026 11:55 PM

Ammon News - The government on Sunday launched a package of strategic initiatives for the agriculture and food security sector under the second executive program of the Economic Modernization Vision (2026–2029), within the "High-Value Industries" engine, aimed at supporting research, development and innovation; expanding the use of modern technologies; enhancing Jordan’s global competitiveness; and improving the efficiency of the national food security system.

The sector’s executive plan is based on a clear methodology to achieve strategic objectives through the "Encouraging modernization and innovation in the agricultural sector and expanding the use of modern technologies" initiative. The initiative’s projects will be implemented during 2026–2029 by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the National Agricultural Research Center.

The projects include promoting the use of water-saving technologies in the agricultural sector during 2026–2029 under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as establishing an artificial insemination center for small ruminants during the same period under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Research Center.

The methodology also includes the initiative to establish a "Center for the Propagation of Agricultural Biological Control Agents" during 2026–2029 under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Research Center.

It also includes a project to establish a "shared-economy company to organize labor and provide integrated agricultural services" through partnerships and alliances based on shared-economy models to regulate agricultural labor and provide an integrated package of services to farmers during the period 2027–2029 under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture.

The sector’s strategic objectives focus on increasing public spending on agricultural research, food security, and innovation and strengthening Jordan’s global competitiveness as a destination for living, alongside enhancing food security by improving the Kingdom’s performance on global food security indicators such as the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) and the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) index.

The plan also aims to extend the sufficiency period of the strategic stockpile of wheat and barley and increase the self-sufficiency rate of basic food commodities, supporting the stability of the national food security system and enhancing the Jordanian economy’s ability to adapt to regional and international challenges and changes within the framework of high-value industries.
