Ammon News - The Chief Commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, Adnan Al Sawair, said that the cancellation rate of tourist bookings in Petra has reached 100% during March, due to the surrounding regional conditions and their impact on tourism activity.
Al Sawair said on Monday that 60% of bookings for April have been cancelled, while 45% of bookings for May have been cancelled, noting that these percentages are likely to rise.
He explained that Petra began 2026 with promising indicators in tourist numbers, but these numbers later dropped sharply, reaching “zero levels” at certain periods due to the regional situation. He stressed that Petra is among the cities most affected, particularly because its community depends heavily on the tourism sector for its economy.
Al Sawair added that the regional authority has started taking preventive measures to protect workers in the sector and maintain their job security, including activating domestic tourism programs such as Urdunna Jannah.
He also noted that the authority will use the period of reduced visitors to implement development, cleaning, and infrastructure rehabilitation projects across the city.
