Ammon News - Mohammad Samadi, head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said on Thursday that the center detected on last Monday an attempted cyberattack by an Iranian hacking group targeting the systems of the General Company for Silos in Irbid, aiming to manipulate its systems, including temperature controls, weighing systems, and backup energy networks.
In remarks to Al-Mamlaka Tv, Samadi revealed that the breach attempt succeeded due to a "weak password" used by one of the company’s system users, which allowed the hackers to access all parts of the General Company for Silos’ network before being stopped by the center.
He confirmed that the center regained control over the Iranian cyber intrusion after the hackers accessed the energy system but before reaching other critical systems.
Samadi emphasized that the center’s rapid detection and response prevented a major Iranian breach that could have had serious consequences for the safety of Jordan’s wheat reserves.
He stressed the importance for all public and private institutions to follow the highest cybersecurity precautions, comply with all policies and regulations issued by the center, and report any incidents immediately.
He noted that the swift response was key to thwarting the attempt.
The National Cybersecurity Center also formed a crisis cell with the Ministry of Digital Economy, which successfully foiled multiple cyberattacks targeting Jordan’s cyberspace.
The Iranian attempt specifically aimed to manipulate temperature systems and affect the country’s strategic wheat reserves, he added.
