21-01-2026 10:08 AM

Ammon News - U.S. President Donald Trump said that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was "working very hard" and had discussed with him the issue of facilities where detained Islamic State fighters are held in northeastern Syria.

Speaking at a news conference in Washington, Trump added that Washington was also "trying to protect the Kurds."

Washington's relationship with the SDF has shifted since Trump came into office last year and threw his full support behind Sharaa.

Syria on Tuesday announced a ceasefire with Kurdish forces it has seized swathes of territory from in the northeast and gave them four days to agree on integrating into the central state, which their main ally, the United States, urged them to accept.
