Ammon News - Archimandrite Dr. Damaskinos Al-Azrai, a Jordanian national, was elected as a new Metropolitan (Bishop) in the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa (Egypt).
The election took place when His Beatitude Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II chaired the Holy Synod meeting at the Patriarchal Residence in Alexandria on the seventh of this month. Following ancient canonical procedures and customs, the Synod issued a decree electing Archimandrite Damaskinos as the Bishop of the Diocese of Mariout in Egypt.
According to the announcement, the consecration of the newly elected Bishop is scheduled to take place on the morning of Saturday, November 1st, at the Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George in Cairo (Old Cairo).
Information has been received regarding the expected attendance of diplomatic and prominent public figures, in addition to the presence of Metropolitan Venedictos of Bethlehem (a member of the Holy Synod of the Church of Jerusalem), and Archimandrite Dr. Meletios, Abbot of the Monastery of Saints Joachim and Anna and Head of the Ecclesiastical Court in Jerusalem.
It is worth noting that Archimandrite Damaskinos Al-Azrai, born in 1987, holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a Higher Diploma in Psychology, and is currently preparing a second doctoral thesis at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in northern Greece. He will be the second Jordanian Metropolitan in the Greek Orthodox Church in Egypt, following Metropolitan Narcissus Qamo.
