CAPE TOWN - Portugal scored six second-half goals and blitzed North Korea 7-0 in Group G Monday, strengthening its chances of advancing to the World Cup's knockout round.
The North Koreans were eliminated from the competition.
Tiago scored two goals for the Portuguese team, which now has the inside track in reaching the knockout round alongside Brazil, which holds first-place in Group G and has already clinched a berth in the next round.
Portugal, with a draw and a win so far, takes on Brazil (2-0) Friday and would automatically advance with a draw. The Portuguese could also advance if they lose because of their high goals total.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Hugu Almeida and Raul Meireles each scored a goal and added an assist and Samao Sabrosa and Leidson had goals against North Korea in the match in Cape Town, South Africa.
The six-goal onslaught started in the 53rd minute. The margin of victory was the largest since Germany beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 in 2002.
Chile went against Switzerland and Spain was scheduyled to play Honduras in Group H games Monday.
