Ammon News - The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has launched a comprehensive national plan to improve water distribution across Jordan during the summer, amid increasing demand and limited water resources. The initiative, overseen by Minister Raed Abu Soud and implemented with the close supervision of Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan, aims to ensure equitable water access across all regions of the Kingdom.
The plan focuses on enhancing the efficiency of water supply systems, increasing available quantities, and ensuring fair distribution to citizens, particularly in governorates facing chronic shortages. According to Abu Soud, the Prime Minister is following up directly on the plan's progress to ensure that all measures are executed effectively and in a timely manner.
The strategy includes technical, administrative, and emergency measures aimed at addressing water supply challenges resulting from this year’s weak rainy season, which has left dam storage levels below 30%. The decline in water reserves has affected several supply sources across the country.
Abu Soud emphasized that dedicated technical teams are operating around the clock to respond to emergencies and improve service delivery. The plan involves redistributing water between regions based on real-time need and availability, in addition to launching intensive monitoring and inspection campaigns to combat illegal usage and tampering with water infrastructure.
In coordination with the Ministry of Interior, Public Security Directorate, and the Judicial Council, enforcement efforts are underway to detect and prevent unauthorized well drilling and attacks on water networks. Random field sampling is also being conducted to ensure consistent water delivery across targeted areas.
The plan further includes rehabilitating existing water sources and drilling new wells. Once treated and tested to meet national drinking water standards, these additional water quantities will be integrated into the regular supply schedule.
Abu Soud reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening water supply infrastructure and called on citizens to support the teams from the Water Authority and affiliated companies, who are working to maintain services under challenging conditions.
The minister added that the current plan is part of broader efforts to achieve a sustainable and long-term improvement in the water sector, which remains one of the most pressing challenges facing Jordan.
