Ammon News - A Jordanian national has been charged after allegedly attempting to open the doors of a Sydney-bound aircraft mid-flight, The Guardian reported.
According to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the 46-year-old man allegedly tried to force open the rear emergency exit door of an AirAsia X flight travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney on Saturday night.
After being moved to a different seat by airline staff, the man reportedly made a second attempt to open another emergency exit, prompting crew and passengers to intervene. During the altercation, he allegedly assaulted a member of the cabin crew.
AirAsia X confirmed the incident, describing the passenger as “disruptive,” but noted that safety was never compromised. “Our cabin crew, who are professionally trained to respond to such situations, took all necessary steps to ensure the safety of everyone on board,” the airline stated.
Upon landing in Sydney, AFP officers met the aircraft and arrested the individual. He has been charged with two counts of endangering the safety of an aircraft and one count of assaulting cabin crew. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Davina Copelin condemned the behaviour, stating: “The actions of this man could have had tragic consequences. The AFP will not hesitate to take action against those who endanger the safety of passengers, crew, or flights.”
The accused was expected to appear before Parramatta Local Court on Sunday.
