Recent discussions have been rife with speculations about the future of our region, particularly with the return of former U.S. President Donald Trump, a figure known for his controversial personality and "unconventional" policies. Yet, Trump remains clear in his stances—what he says, he does, and his ideas are publicly declared.
Numerous analyses and predictions circulating lately, especially concerning our region and Jordan specifically.
As a journalist, I refrain from writing based on speculations, as writers are not fortune-tellers. I only delve into analyses grounded in serious thought and logical frameworks. Unfortunately, many "analysts" mix facts with illogical conclusions. I prefer to deal with realities, particularly when addressing the unknown future, while understanding that history often repeats itself; characters change, while the driving forces of humanity-power, influence and survival remain consistent.
Some argue that Trump’s return might not bode well, citing reasons drawn from his presidency between 2017 and 2021. However, the challenge lies in the views that are portrayed in writing, often presented to audiences as certainties. Recently, a cloud of pessimism and ambiguity has dominated our narratives.
Writing with a pessimistic outlook on the future, painting a negative picture for readers, tends to ignore the truths that could be leveraged to our advantage. Jordan’s policies are rooted in promoting the greater good, both domestically and abroad. This foundation has enabled the nation to produce and export three globally recognized initiatives I have highlighted in past writings, all aimed at preserving human dignity: The Amman Message, World Interfaith Harmony Week, and A Common Word. These initiatives have left a profound, positive impact, even during the most challenging times.
The Hashemite rule is renowned for its philosophy of citizenship—a concept encompassing justice, equality, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or other considerations. These values have been effectively adopted and implemented, fostering a shared life characterized by harmony, or what is commonly referred to as "coexistence." Over the years, Jordan's celebrated religious diversity has contributed to a unique societal harmony, where Muslims and Christians live in peace.
Naturally, these values have extended to Jordan’s international relations, positioning the kingdom as a model of bridge-building and cross-cultural understanding. The nation’s commitment to justice and humanity transcends its borders, shaping a consistent diplomatic approach rooted in the belief that peace begins at home but must expand globally. This is why Jordan has not only become a safe haven for refugees, offering them temporary or permanent homes, but also a pivotal player in mediating and resolving regional and international conflicts—earning the kingdom the title "land of peace."
Moreover, Jordan’s leadership, particularly His Majesty King Abdullah II, commands immense global respect and admiration. U.S. President Joe Biden has repeatedly praised His Majesty’s wise leadership and pivotal role in advancing peace. Similarly, Russian President Vladimir Putin has acknowledged Jordan’s efforts in addressing regional and international challenges and King Abdullah’s unwavering commitment to regional stability.
In 2022, former President Trump also expressed his respect for Jordan’s humanitarian efforts, commending the kingdom’s leadership in refugee care and camp management. He highlighted the deepening strength of U.S.-Jordan relations, attributing this to mutual humanitarian collaboration under King Abdullah II’s leadership.
The European Union views Jordan’s domestic and foreign policies as a symbol of stability, moderation, and justice. It appreciates the kingdom’s efforts to balance internal challenges with its regional and international commitments, recognizing Jordan as a key partner in promoting peace and security in the region.
This global perception of Jordan’s policies has not, and will not, waver. Instead, it strengthens over time because the kingdom is built on foundations of justice, equality, and stability.
So, should we remain trapped in a cycle of pessimism and despair over Trump’s return, particularly regarding its implications for Jordan? I think not. I firmly believe that our stances will remain steadfast, prioritizing humanity and preserving human dignity within our homeland and beyond.
