Ammon News - Energy Minister Highlights Alignment of New Laws with Economic Modernization Vision

The recently enacted energy laws in Jordan support the use of renewable energy and are subject to ongoing review to ensure they remain aligned with technological and economic advancements, according to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Al-Kharabsheh.

Speaking at a dialogue session on Monday organized by the EDAMA Association under the theme "Renewable Energy and New Electricity Laws: Alignment with the Economic Modernization Vision", Al-Kharabsheh stressed that the government is committed to implementing its vision for economic modernization. The plan focuses on accelerated economic growth and improved quality of life for citizens, with sustainability and energy diversification as key components.

Jordan, he noted, has been a leader in the region's energy transition, aiming to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix to 31% in the short term, with a goal of reaching 50% in the near future.

The minister highlighted that the recent legal amendments were developed in consultation with experts and by examining international best practices. Among the key updates is the exemption of energy storage equipment from taxes, designed to boost renewable energy adoption.

The introduction of a time-of-use electricity tariff, offering consumers up to a 15% discount during peak hours, is another significant change. The tariff aims to promote renewable energy projects and manage grid load during periods of high demand. Al-Kharabsheh noted that this tariff has been implemented for medium-scale industrial users since July 1 and will expand to hospitals and hotels starting next year.

He acknowledged the challenge posed by increasing demand on the electrical grid and emphasized that the ministry is developing strategic plans to address peak load management.

The session, hosted by EDAMA, brought together representatives from the public and private sectors. It aimed to foster collaboration and build strategic partnerships to advance the green economy and promote a sustainable future.
