He added that his escape to the Russian base was a prelude to going to Moscow.

Several Hebrew media outlets quoted officials as saying that they do not know the whereabouts of the fugitive Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and whether he has left the country.

Channel 12 quoted unnamed Israeli officials as saying that it is not certain that Assad has fled Syria.

The Walla news website said that according to an Israeli official, Assad flew last night from Damascus to the Russian Hmeimim air base, intending to continue from there to Moscow. The agency quoted an American official as saying that the United States spotted Assad leaving the capital and "we believed he was planning to escape to Russia."

However, there are no current indications that Assad has left Syria.
