General Assembly resumes emergency session to address grave situation in Gaza

05-12-2024 11:17 AM

Ammon News - The United Nations General Assembly resumed its tenth emergency special session to address the grave situation in the Gaza Strip tonight.

The Permanent Representative of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, pointed out that the genocide against the Palestinian civilian population continues, after 424 days, in violation of all rules of international law and crossing all red lines, stressing the need to put an end to Israel’s impunity.

Mansour addressed the attack by Israel, the occupying power, on the United Nations, its Secretary-General, its bodies and agencies, especially UNRWA, which is the backbone of the humanitarian response to the catastrophic situation in Gaza, and the lifeline for Palestinian refugees, referring to Israel's attacks on peacekeeping forces and the UN Charter and resolutions.

He stressed Israel's violation of all interim orders issued by the International Court of Justice to confront the threat of genocide, and its continued commission of horrific crimes, war crimes and crimes against humanity every day with every passing second, calling on all countries to use their influence to put an end to these massacres committed by Israel against the Palestinian people.

He further called for the need to stop this aggression against our collective humanity, stressing that reaching an immediate and unconditional ceasefire is the only way to stop this genocide, protect lives, release prisoners and hostages and preserve hope for a different future.

He pointed out that the General Assembly voted yesterday by an overwhelming majority in favor of ending the illegal Israeli presence in the occupied Palestinian territory, and in favor of a high-level international conference to implement the United Nations resolutions, especially those related to the peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and the two-state solution,

He also stressed that the Palestinian people’s achievement of their inalienable rights, including self-determination and return, and achieving the independence of a sovereign Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, is the only way to transform our region, and that achieving peace in our region can contribute to transforming our world.

Mansour called for an end to the genocide, illegal colonial occupation, and apartheid regime that the Palestinian people have been suffering from for decades, calling on all states to assume their responsibilities under international law, including humanitarian law and human rights law, and to adhere to the interim orders issued by the International Court of Justice and its legal advisory opinion, and to preserve a world governed by law.

Mansour had met with the President of the General Assembly before the start of this session of the tenth emergency special session, indicating that the General Assembly will hold the second session of this session on December 11, where two resolutions will be adopted regarding UNRWA and the demand for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
