Ammon News - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has revealed that the number of registered Syrian refugees in Jordan has dropped to less than 620,000.
Jordan has been hosting around 1.3 million Syrians since the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including around 620,000 Syrian refugees registered with the UNHCR.
About 6,250 Syrian refugees have been resettled in a third country as of the end of October 2024, compared to 9,760 refugees who were resettled throughout 2023, the UNHCR reported to Al-Mamlaka TV.
Resettlement is a process that leads to a durable solution in a third country for refugees who cannot integrate locally or return to their country of origin, and who have ongoing protection needs in the country where they live, according to the UN.
The number of voluntary returns from Jordan to Syria has reached 5,520 so far in 2024, bringing the total number of returns since 2016 to 74,725.
Jordan is one of the countries most affected by the Syrian crisis, hosting the second highest number of refugees per capita in the world, mostly from Syria, with large groups from Iraq, Yemen, Sudan and Somalia.
