In 2016, Trump was elected as the 45th president with 304 electoral votes, defeating Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, and he subsequently ran again in 2020 but was beaten by Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who is the current president of the United States.

Donald Trump will start his second term the moment he is inaugurated on January 20, 2025.

The Twenty-Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states that no individual is allowed to serve as president for more than two terms.

What does the Twenty-Second Amendment entail?

The Twenty-Second Amendment was approved on February 27, 1951, and establishes term limits for an elected president.

As stated by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, George Washington, the initial president of the United States, resigned after completing two terms.

This informal limit has been observed by every president since Washington, until Franklin Roosevelt, who served four terms from 1932 to 1944.

In 1947, two years following Roosevelt’s passing, the amendment started its journey in the U.S. House of Representatives as a suggestion to restrict a president’s tenure to two terms.

Following a review by the Senate, the suggested amendment was approved and forwarded to the states for ratification.
