Hebrew media: Mossad discussed "minor agreement" for Gaza

Ammon News - Israeli media sources discussed a new plan for a "small agreement" between Israel and Hamas, which was talked about by Israeli Mossad leader David Barnea in Doha with mediators from Qatar.

Over the course of Sunday and Monday, discussions took place in Doha involving Barnea, CIA head William Burns, and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani about a potential agreement between Israel and Hamas involving a prisoner exchange and ceasefire.

Yedioth Ahronoth, a Hebrew newspaper, reported on the happenings in Doha where Barnea spoke with mediators about a suggestion to free 11 to 14 Israeli prisoners, including women and elderly individuals held by Palestinian factions, in return for a month-long ceasefire.

Per the same plan, Israel will free Palestinian prisoners currently in its jails, and the quantity will be determined in talks as per the same insider.

Israel believes there are 101 prisoners in Gaza, while Hamas claims that numerous prisoners have been killed in Israeli raids.

Yedioth Ahronoth stated that the offer will be presented to Hamas leaders soon to see if they are willing to return to negotiations for a "small deal."

According to unknown sources cited by the newspaper, in this proposed deal, Israel will be requested to release more Palestinian prisoners in exchange for its own prisoners. Hamas will demand a higher number due to the lack of army withdrawal from Gaza or complete war cessation.

As of 20:30 GMT, there has been no official confirmation from the mediators and Israel on this proposal.

In the right-wing government coalition, unnamed officials were quoted by the Hebrew newspaper "Israel Hayom" (private) as saying they "accept this suggestion."

They stated that any suggestion lacking a solution to stop the war could be talked about.

The private Israeli Channel 12 stated that Israel is examining the offer, with mediators to investigate Hamas's reaction.

Although Hamas did not immediately respond to the news reported in Hebrew media, the group's leader, Sami Abu Zuhri, stated in a press conference on Tuesday evening that Hamas had agreed to discuss new ceasefire and prisoner exchange proposals at the request of mediators. This is a shift from their previous stance of insisting on implementing what was agreed upon in negotiations.

He stated that the movement conducted "a few gatherings about this issue," mentioning that there are "additional gatherings scheduled on the same topic," but did not provide specifics.

He repeated that his movement is willing to consider any agreement or suggestions that will stop the suffering of the people in Gaza, achieve a permanent ceasefire, end the occupation in the entire area, remove the blockade, offer assistance, support and housing to the people, rebuild, and secure a substantial agreement for the prisoners.

On Monday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced that Barnea had come back from Doha after holding talks with the CIA chief and the Qatari prime minister.

He stated that in Doha, the parties talked about a fresh, comprehensive plan to bring back the kidnapped soldiers, which integrates past suggestions and considers the key issues and recent developments in the region.

He went on to say that in the upcoming days, the mediators will keep discussing with Hamas to assess the possibility of the negotiations and keep working towards achieving an agreement.

Although Qatar and Egypt have been trying to mediate for months and proposing various agreements to stop the fighting in Gaza and exchange prisoners, Netanyahu keeps adding new conditions such as maintaining control over the Philadelphi Corridor and Rafah crossing, as well as inspecting returning Palestinian fighters through the Netzarim Corridor.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been carrying out a genocide in Gaza with backing from the United States, resulting in over 144,000 Palestinians dead or injured, predominantly children and women, with more than 10,000 individuals unaccounted for. This has caused extensive devastation and starvation, claiming the lives of numerous children and elderly individuals, creating one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally. Tel Aviv persists in carrying out its killings, disregarding the call from the UN Security Council to cease them at once, and the directives from the International Court of Justice to implement actions to prevent genocidal acts and enhance the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
