Arab League criticizes Israel's ban on UNRWA as dangerous

29-10-2024 03:27 PM

Ammon News - Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, expressed concern over Israel's move to prohibit the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in East Jerusalem, considering it a troubling precedent on the global stage. UNRWA was not created by Israel but by a 1949 UN resolution, thus the responsibility for its continuance falls on the UN General Assembly.

Aboul Gheit strongly denounced the Israeli decision to halt the agency that offers education and health services to over 2.5 million refugees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, stating it is part of a long-term Israeli strategy to undermine and discredit the agency.

Aboul Gheit urged the Security Council member states to address this risky decision, stating that without UNRWA's presence or if its operations are prohibited, humanitarian efforts in Gaza will be in jeopardy.
