Ammon News - The Middle East braced for another round of violence Monday, after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on a call Sunday with Group of Seven foreign ministers that Iran could attack Israel within 24 to 48 hours, according to two diplomats briefed on the call, according to Wall Street Journal.
Blinken didn’t say what form an attack could take. U.S. officials have been working with their international partners to try to contain tensions in the Middle East amid warnings by Iran and pro-Iranian militias that they will attack Israel following the assassinations last week of Hamas’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran and senior Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
U.S. officials said they have since the weekend started seeing Iran moving missile launchers and conducting military drills, which could indicate Tehran is preparing for an attack in the coming days, Wall Street Journal said.
The White House said Monday that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed by their national security team on U.S. military efforts to support Israel and U.S. military forces in case of another attack by Iran and its proxies, AP reported.
The briefing included a discussion of diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions and finalize a possible agreement for a ceasefire and hostage release. Biden and Harris also received details about the attack on Al Asad Air Base in Iraq.
"One of the points of the engagements that we have had is to urge countries to pass messages to Iran and urge countries to make clear to Iran that it is very much not in their interests to escalate this conflict, that it is very much not in their interest to launch another attack on Israel," said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, according to Reuters.
