Ammon News - Agriculture Ministry spokesperson Lawrence Majali confirmed that the local market will not be affected if the import of frozen poultry from Brazil is suspended, neither in terms of quantities supplied to the market nor in prices, after an infection with Newcastle disease was detected in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The Jordanian market depends on local production by 85%, distributed between chilled and fresh, while the percentage of the local market’s dependence on imported frozen chicken is 15%, Majali said.
The current year was the least imported of chicken due to the high expected local production quantities, he added, indicating that the Ministry is working to ensure that chicken imports reach 0% by the end of the 2024 or the beginning of next year.
The Brazilian government has suspended the country's exports of poultry meat to some countries after detecting a case of Newcastle disease in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein Producers on Friday.
