Ammon News - Jordan’s 2024 Recycling Conference and Exhibition: Promoting Partnerships for Sustainable Waste Management and Recycling in Jordan

The USAID Recycling in Jordan Project, in partnership with Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), Ministry of Environment (MOENV), and private sector associations, organized the second Jordan Recycling Conference and Exhibition, held on June 11 and 12, 2024, at the St. Regis Amman.
The event, themed “Promoting Partnerships,” brought together key stakeholders in the recycling and sustainable waste management sectors, marking a significant milestone in Jordan’s environmental and economic initiatives.

To advance private sector-led recycling efforts, the conference served as a crucial platform for connecting diverse players within the sector. Government bodies, private sector entities, waste generators, recycling service providers, material processors, and training organizations came together to showcase achievements, share best practices, and discuss strategies for scaling up effective recycling practices across the country. Industry leaders and policymakers shared insights on the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in recycling and sustainable waste management, fostering a rich exchange of ideas.

“Reusing and recycling products not only helps keep our communities cleaner, it is an essential part of the solution to the climate crisis facing our planet. Together, we can improve recycling, create jobs, and increase private sector profits — all while reducing the waste going to landfills and preserving Earth’s precious and limited resources.” said USAID/Jordan Deputy Mission Director Christopher Steel.

The exhibition featured 62 exhibitors from the recycling sector, showcasing innovative recycling technologies, products, and services from local and international companies, highlighting advancements and potential in the sector. Attendees also benefited from networking opportunities and explored potential partnerships and collaborations.

His Excellency Dr. Jihad Al-Sawair, Assistant Secretary General for the Ministry of Environment, stated that, "The Jordanian government is making every effort to develop the waste management sector and enhance the capabilities of its workers, believing in the necessity of adopting global environmental principles." He added that the success of recycling programs depends on community awareness and government commitment to providing the appropriate infrastructure, such as collection, sorting, and processing centers which will ensure the preservation of environmental elements and the sustainability of natural resources.”

His Excellency Ahmad Malkawi, Amman City Manager, added: "The city of Amman has developed plans to face challenges and improve the quality of life, including the Amman Resilience Strategy, the Amman Climate Change Plan, and the Amman Green City Plan."

The Recycling in Jordan Activity is funded through the U.S.-Jordanian memorandum of understanding for economic development. The United States is celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations with Jordan in 2024.
