Ammon News - Debt burdens the vast majority of refugees in Jordan, in conjunction with a decline in the humanitarian aid provided, on which refugee families mainly depend, with nine out of every ten refugee families suffering from debt.

91% of Syrian refugee families and 87% of non-Syrian refugee families were burdened with debt in the 4th quarter of 2023, according to the assessment of the "Social and Economic Situation of Refugees in Jordan", conducted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for the 4th quarter of 2023.

The percentage of families burdened with debt decreased with a slight decline in the 4th quarter compared to the 2nd quarter of 2023, and the reasons for borrowing money were rent (31%), food (28%), health care expenses (19%), and bills such as water and electricity (18%), Al-Mamlaka TV reported.

Jordan hosts 55,329,000 Iraqi refugees registered with UNHCR, and more than 1.3 million Syrians since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, including 642,888 Syrian refugees registered with UNHCR.

UNHCR says that 717,466 refugees are registered with it of all nationalities except for Palestinian refugees who are affiliated with UNRWA, until 18 February of 2024.
