42% of Jordan's population lives in Amman

Ammon news -Ahmad Alhyari- Jordan's population growth rate reached 2.2%, in 2023, according to estimates by the Department of Statistics (DoS)

Data from the Department of Statistics showed that the total estimated population of Jordan by the end of 2023 was about 11.516 million people, with 52.9% males and 47.1% females.

The report, which Ammon reviewed, stated that 42% of Jordan’s population lives in Amman, followed by Irbid, with 18.5%, and 14.3% in Zarqa, and the report considered these three governorates to be among the most attractive governorates for the population, as 74.8% of the population was concentrated there.

Although, about half of the Kingdom’s area is located in the southern governorates of Karak, Tafila, Ma’an, and Aqaba, and it contains only 8% of the total population of the Kingdom, as Tafila Governorate recorded the lowest percentage of population with 1%, the report indicated.

The population of the Capital, Amman, by the end of 2023 was about 4.834 million people, about 593.2 thousand in Balqa Governorate, about 1.647 million in Zarqa, about 228.2 thousand in Madaba, 2.135 million in Irbid, 663.4 thousand in Mafraq, 286 thousand in Jerash, 212.5 thousand in Ajloun, 381.9 thousand in Karak, 116.2 thousand in Tafila, 191.1 thousand in Ma'an, and 227 thousand in Aqaba, according to the population estimate by governorate.

As for the estimated population of the Kingdom by urban and rural areas, the data revealed that 90.3% of the Kingdom’s population lives in urban areas (gatherings with a population of 5,000 people or more), with a number of approximately 10.398 million people, compared to 1.118 million people living in the countryside, at the end of 2023.

3.291 million people in Jordan are under the age of 25 years, concentrated in the age group of 0-9 years, while those over the age of 65 years numbered 424.98 thousand people, the data revealed.
