Ammon News - Specialists and environmentalists urged Tuesday the employment of digital agriculture to counter climate change during a forum in Amman entitled Digital Agriculture Solutions Forum 2023.

Princess Basma bint Ali, who joined the forum activities, said digital agriculture "has the potential to help small farmers become more resilient and improve their livelihoods."

Princess Basma discussed the "need" for effective partnerships and incentives to maintain a comprehensive digital ecosystem, adding that expediting their use would reduce the depletion of natural resources and enhance resilience to the challenges of climate change.

Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hanifat said Jordan has a "good" digital infrastructure at the national level and that it has drafted a strategy to develop digital solutions for the agricultural sector, noting the start of providing digital agricultural government services, developing digital extension services and establishing six training centres on digital farming technologies.

The representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in Jordan, Nabil Assaf, said innovation and digital technologies provide solutions to overcome the challenges of the agricultural sector, especially the decrease in agricultural areas, the spread of pests and the effects of climate change.

The activities of the three-day forum are being supported by the FAO, the UN and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
