Russia’s Attack on Kakhovka HPP, Ukraine Call for International Action

Ammon News - The Russian Federation attacked the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP) by blowing it up on Tuesday night according to Ukrainian sources. The dam was located near the town of Nova Kakhovka in the currently occupied territory of the Kherson region and contained approximately 18,2 cubic kilometers of water inside the Kakhovka water reservoir. According to the current estimates, more than 80 small towns and villages on both sides of the Dnipro River now face the immediate impact of floods as well as 40 thousand citizens stuck in the emergency zone.

Units of the National Police and the State Emergency Service of the Kherson region of Ukraine work to evacuate the civilian population from flooding zones, they reported that nearly 2 thousand building are submerged in water as of Wednesday morning. It’s been revealed by Ukrainian authorities that the decreased water level in the water reservoir poses a significant risk to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant currently occupied by Russia which threatens the entire region's safety and security.

Ukrainian authorities report that this attack was “a deliberate and calculated assault on Ukrainian critical infrastructure, aimed at maximizing civilian casualties and causing widespread destruction”.
Another risk that these attacks pose is the risks to food security. The left bank of the Kherson region is well-known to be a strategically important harvesting areas in Ukraine. So, by blowing up the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant, they threaten global food security and prices. Ukrainian authorities stated that “an average citizen in Jordan and in the wider Middle East region and Africa should understand that it is Russia who have deprived their families of accessible food or imposed additional financial burden with the increase of price for food commodities”.

Prior discussions among the Russian occupation forces in the Kherson region and propagandists on Russian television allude to a sinister plan behind this terrorist attack. It is an unequivocal message from the Kremlin, a response to any calls for peace talks with the Russian Federation.
Ukrainian authorities call on international community to stand united and have Russia take responsibility for the attacks on Ukraine. They implore Ukraine’s international partners to join on the implementation of The Peace Formula put forth by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with particular attention to countering these attacks, and ensuring nuclear and energy security.
Russia must be held accountable for its actions. It should bear the responsibility for the consequences inflicted upon the Ukrainian people, their infrastructure, and the environment.
Ukrainian authorities urge the world to recognize that Russia “must be expelled from every inch of Ukrainian land and that victory lies in Ukraine's hands, they urge that the time for action is now, and the international community must rise to the occasion to halt the aggression of the Russia.
