Jordanian Christians mark Palm Sunday

09-04-2023 12:53 PM

Ammon News - Jordanian Christians on Sunday celebrated Palm Sunday, the first day of Holy Week and the Sunday before Easter, commemorating Jesus Christ's entry into Jerusalem.

In churches across the Kingdom, worshippers lifted olive branches, palm fronds, and candles, their voices ringing out in unison as they chanted the holiday hymns.

At the Our Lady of Carmel Church in the al-Hashemi al-Shammali district of Amman, Bishop Jamal Daibes, the Latin Patriarchal Vicar, was at the helm of a spirited mass, followed by a sermon in which he highlighted the essence of Palm Sunday, which commemorates the arrival of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem as a triumphant leader, bearing a divine message of redemption, reconciliation, and love.

At the S. Heart of Jesus Church, located in Tlaa Al-Ali, northwest of Amman, Father Rifaat Badr, the church's pastor, led the Palm Sunday mass and delivered a sermon in which he emphasized that on Palm Sunday, Christians carry olive branches and palm fronds as they hold a profound connotation of peace.

According to Badr, the gesture of holding up an olive branch signifies an unwavering longing for peace in the Holy Land, especially in the city of Jerusalem, which, he said, is still yearning for peace and serenity.
