Ammon News - The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply announced the total grocery and foodstuff violations that were detected during the first quarter of 2023 amounted to 1,220.
The ministry, in a statement on Wednesday, said its monitoring workers carried out 367 inspection tours on markets nationwide from the beginning of Ramadan to last Tuesday, during which about 5,500 shops were visited.
The ministry added that 314 grocery violations were recorded, 58 for failing to comply with the price ceilings set for poultry products, indicating that most irregularities are related to failure to announce price tags.
As for the legal side, penalty for breaching price ceilings ranges between JD1,000 to JD3,000, or imprisonment for a 2-6 month jail term, or both penalties together, the ministry said.
Monitoring tours are conducted to some areas accompanied by Public Security Directorate (PSD), which covers Amman's downtown markets to monitor prices, the ministry noted.
In its statement, the ministry affirmed that it intervenes by "force of law" to control prices of any basic commodity under price caps previously set to avoid overpricing practices.
