Ammon News - Prime Minister Dr. Bishr Al-Khasawneh and his Iraqi counterpart, Mustafa Al-Kazemi, laid today, Thursday, the foundation stone for the Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project, close to the border between the two countries within the territory of the Republic of Iraq.
This marks the launch of the Iraqi-Jordanian electrical interconnection project and the official announcement of its implementation.
The first phase of the project includes the implementation of a high-voltage transmission line linking the eastern region of Jordan, Al-Rishah, with the western region of existing Iraq. The length of the line is approximately 300 km, and an estimated cost of $140 million is estimated to be ready by the end of 2022.
The Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project, in its first phase, aims to provide the Iraqi side with an electric capacity of 150 MW from Jordan, and raise it to 500 MW in the second phase, and 900 MW during the third phase.
The first phase of the project is a step towards strengthening the electrical interconnection system between the two countries and developing the internal networks, allowing the opportunity to exchange energy between the two sides in larger quantities, which contributes to strengthening the electrical systems in both countries.
This project will increase Jordan's electrical connection points with neighboring countries and provide more opportunities for indirect linkage in the future with many countries in the region.
The Jordanian and Iraqi governments signed in September 2020, a contract to connect the electricity grid and sell electric power between the two countries.
