Ammon News - Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Nasser Shraideh said, on Tuesday, that the ministry will sign, in the coming weeks, a new agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to provide 130 million euros; To enhance food security in Jordan.
"This agreement builds on the effort made by the government during the past period, not only to enhance its purchases of strategic commodities of wheat and barley, but also to build its storage capabilities to be able to reach a storage capacity to provide these commodities for a period of 24 months”, he added.
Shraideh pointed out that these and other agreements to enhance emergency food security in Jordan come in response to the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II, who directed the government early on to strengthen the food security system in Jordan, through which we were able to provide strategic materials such as wheat and barley to all citizens.
Jordan and the OPEC Fund for International Development signed on Tuesday an agreement to finance the emergency food security project in Jordan with a total value of $100 million, as part of an integrated vision to continue providing liquidity to the general budget to finance the purchase of strategic goods and enhance the food security system in Jordan, with a total value of $200 million.
Shraideh explained that this agreement is one of three agreements. The first was signed with the Islamic Development Bank Group last week and included the provision of a total of $200 million.
He indicated, "The government policy related to food security succeeded during the Corona pandemic crisis and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis in providing sufficient supplies to consumers of strategic commodities, as silos and containers that were built during the last period enabled them to maintain sufficient stocks of wheat and barley at any time."
