Ammon News - Around 7,045 electric vehicles (EVs) were bought from the free zone in Zarqa during the first half of 2022, up from 2,285 during the same period in 2021, according to recent statistics.

This threefold increase in EV purchases is indicative of a growing public preference for electric vehicles in light of the unprecedented rise in conventional fuel prices locally.

Muhammad Bustanji, president of the Jordanian Free Zones Investors Association, has revealed that the Zarqa Free Zone supplied approximately 24,000 vehicles to the local market during the first half of this year, a figure comparable to that of the same period in 2021.

During the reporting period, the local market received 7,628 gasoline-powered vehicles and 4,780 diesel-powered vehicles, compared to 8,846 and 5,198, respectively, during the same period in 2021.

Hybrid vehicles (powered by an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors) imported into the local market plummeted from 7,933 in the same period in 2021 to 4,457 in 2022.

In contrast to 22,928 vehicles in the first half of 2021, Bustanji noted that 19,158 vehicles were re-exported from the Zarqa Free Zone to other countries in the first six months of 2022.
