Ammon News - The First Promotional Conference on Pioneering Medical Surgeries in Jordan opened on Tuesday to review leading surgeries by Jordanian doctors and highlight the Kingdom as an international and regional medical tourism destination.

Various health entities and the Ministry of Toursim are taking part in the two-day conference, which was organized by Jordan Heart Health Magazine, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.

Addressing the gathering, Ministry of health Secretary-General for Technical and Administrative Affairs Ilham Khreisat said the conference aims to promote the partnership between the public and private medical sectors, which turned the Kingdom into a leader in the region as it attracted Arab patients to seek treatment in the Kingdom.

She said many advanced surgeries were conducted in Health Ministry, Royal Medical Services, university and private sector hospitals, thanks to available medical resources and equipment and diverse expertise and specialties for various surgical interventions.

Khreisat said a strong medical sector that offers necessary health care service requires support partners to enhance medical tourism.

The ministry recently began expansion of the infrastructure and development of health services, including opening the Samih Darwazah Oncology Center, which has received 400 cancer patients since it became operational six months ago, she said.

The Specialized Surgery Hospital at Al-Bashir Hospitals conducted 2,500 chest, open heart, blood vessels and catheterization surgeries since it opened in August, as well as the expansion of cardiac surgeries at Prince Hamzah Hospital, the Specialty Surgery Hospital, the New Al Hussein Hospital and Al Karak Government Hospital, Khreisat added.

Head of the conference's scientific committee Brig. Dr. Issa Ghanma noted the "qualitative" surgeries that had been conducted in the Kingdom, adding that many lectures and sessions will be held on medical tourism and various heart, bone, neurology, ear, nose and throat, bariatric and other surgeries in the Kingdom.

For his part, President of the Private Hospitals Association Dr. Fawzi Al-Hamouri said that Jordanian doctors made outstanding achievements as the Jordanian medical sector invests in human resources, including doctors and nurses, in addition to fully equipped hospitals.

Cardiologist, Senator Yousef Al Goussous, said that Jordan is the first Arab country and the fifth in the world in the field of medical tourism, noting that the armed forces began in 1950 sending medical students to the United Kingdom, the United States and renowned universities.

He also cited the establishment of the Heart Center at the Royal Medical Services in 1966, and the groundbreaking operations conducted by the Royal Medical Services since its establishment.
