Ammon News - Chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Musa Ma'atah, stressed the importance of enhancing university students' role and empowerment in Jordan's political life.

This engagement, he noted, should be in line with the Royal directives and the outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System (RCMPS), which was reflected in the constitutional and legal amendments, which lowered the candidate's age in parliamentary elections.

Addressing student affairs deans at public and private universities, to highlight the universities' extra-curricular "I Participate" programme, he reviewed the IEC's awareness and strategy that stimulates community participation in Jordan's political process.

In this regard, he announced regulations aimed to highlight and promote youth participation in party work.

The minister said the programme aims to raise students' awareness in the areas of democracy, citizenship, the rule of law, political parties' role, fair elections and local governance.

Calling on student affairs deans to support the programme, he said this effort would enhance Jordanian youth's role in dialogue and political activities and cement their engagement in political life and the decision-making process, given their empowerment is a national responsibility.

The IEC, he noted, is implementing the programme in 12 universities under a partnership project, and in 13 universities by Crown Prince Foundation (CPF).

To ensure better outcomes, he said coordination is underway to follow up on the programme's implementation to orchestrate efforts, in cooperation with CPF.

To date, he said the programme , since it became under the IEC's umbrella in March 2022, has received 4,333 registration applications and 2, 881 eligible beneficiaries began receiving training.
