Ammon News - Deputizing for Minister of State for Media Affairs, Faisal Shboul, the Jordan News Agency (Petra), Director-General Fayeq Hijazin, on Monday attended a seminar on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, organized by the Faculty of Mass Communication at the Yarmouk University.

Hijazin said that World Press Day is a reminder for the need to respect freedom of the press and its ethics, and providing a free and safe media environment for journalists, enabling them to practice their work professionally and in compliance with journalism values and standards.

Moderated by Dean of the Faculty, Zuhair Tahat, Hijazin added that the assassination of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh paves the way for more research in the field of press freedoms, pointing out that Israel didn't assassinate Abu Akleh, but rather the whole truth that Israel doesn't want to show to the world.

He stressed that many countries of the world use the media to conceal and distort facts in times of crises, adding, "When we talk about media freedom, we talk about the independence of the media in all respects."

Hijazin indicated that the traditional media outlets at this stage is suffering from social media dominance, which requires reformulating the media policy, and working to take the necessary measures to control the content that is published on social media platforms, which has become saturated with hate speech and fake news, calling on traditional media outlets to develop their tools to enable them to recover their share of advertisements.

For his part, Yarmouk University President, Islam Massad, announced that the university is planning to allocate a scholarship under the name of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, extending the university's condolences to the Abu Akleh family, the Palestinian people, and the entire media outlets.

The seminar was also attended by the Lower House National Guidance, Media and Culture Committee, MP Yasar Khasawneh, President of the Jordan Press Association (JPA), Rakan Sa'aydah, and Head of the Journalism section, Esmat Haddad and a number of students
