Ammon News - Director of the Dana Biosphere Reserve (DBR), Amer Al-Rufou, said the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) has taken a package of programs and plans to protect migratory birds that cross Jordan to Africa or Europe, and settle in stopover periods in several ecological sites countrywide.

In a press statement on Sunday, Al-Rufou said this year's World Migratory Bird Day is dedicated to Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) with the theme: "Dim the Light for Birds at Night," to reduce light pollution that harms birds and forces flocks to change migration paths to follow unsafe and longer courses, which poses death risks.


To help promote this global initiative , he noted DBR used dim lights in their facilities, as other reserves worldwide.


Jordan, he noted, is considered the second most important travel course for migratory birds, represented Rift Valley-Red Sea Flyway, where the corridor constitutes an ecological bridge that connects the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia, and supports a variety of distinguished habitats.


Al-Rufou indicated that 437 birds were recorded in Jordan, which reflects the importance of the Kingdom's geographical location for migratory birds.


DBR is implementing a series of annual campaigns and events, aimed at preserving migratory birds and raise awareness at the national level to conserve winged visitors, especially in their stopover areas, he noted.
