Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Mousa on Monday appointed former Jordanian minister Nancy Bakair as Commissioner of Civil Society Affairs at the Arab league
Bakair had previously held the positions of Minister of Culture and minister Public Sector Development in Jordan before succeeding new Senate President Taher Al Masri, who had occupied the Arab League Civil Society Affairs Commisioner's post since August 2001.
Bakair said in a phone call with 'Ammon News' Monday from Cairo that this position is an honorary one yet is loaded with activities and responsibilities, entailing coordination between Arab non-governmental organizations (NGOs) within the context of the Arab League's interest with non-official organizations.
A statement issued Monday by the Arab league said Bakair has worked as an assistant secretary general at the league and was the first woman to assume such a position.
Al Masri was the first to occupy the post of Commissioner of Civil Society Affairs for the Arab League.
It is noted that the commissioner position for Civil Society Affairs at the Arab League is rather pro-bono (for the public good), with a total salary sum of one Dinar.
